I suggest you ...

The gps is left on when the application goes to background.

It needs to be turned off.

When background locations is set to no, after closing and removing the app via app switcher, locations in settings still show this app currently using location services. Why?

GPS use should be stopped 5-10 minutes after closing the app. That way it doesn't have to reload each time the app is opened during periods of frequent use, but doesn't drain the battery.

Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon. GPS stays on after closing app. No way to turn off after use. Must kill app or reboot.
No other GPS app has this problem.

If you turn off the background alerts it turns off the location services on the iPhone when the app is not active. Does that solve your problem?

Agreed. gps left on drains the battery quickly. I have to force close the app to stop the gps on Galaxy Nexus cdma.
